Every country has its own mind, which can be called its national spirit or national character, shaped by its own history and tradition.
With a history of over 2,000 years, Japan also has its own spirit and mind, created by its past.
Asuka, described in this brochure, was Japan's political and cultural center some 1,400 years ago when the foundations of Japan as a national state were first laid. Around Asuka, various cultural influences, such as Buddhism introduced from China and Korea, were integrated to form a spiritual culture characteristic of the Japanese nation. Thus, it can be said that Asuka is the spiritual home of the Japanese people.
We heartily welcome you to Asuka, the spiritual cradle of the Japanese nation. We hope that you will come to understand the traditional spirit of the Japanese people by coming into contact with Asuka's natural features, its mountains, rivers and natual scenery, as well as old temples, kofuns(tumuli) and ancient relics, which our foundation is doing its best to preserve.
About Asuka Historical National Government Park
Asuka Park is a national park situated in Asuka Village, Taikaichi County, Nara Prefecture.
Asuka Historical National Government Park was established by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism as part of a plan to protect the abundant nature and rich cultural heritage in the 60ha area of Asuka.
Although it is a park, it does not mean that it is partitioned off by fences and the like.
The Asuka Historical Park is made up of the 5 areas, and the characteristics of each are utilized to create the character of the park.
Whether visiting alone or in a group, we sincerely hope that you can enjoy the abundance of nature and deep sense of history here.

In the Asuka Historical Park, there are many trees and flowers from ancient times that appear in Manyo poetry. They are introduced in part here.

The Omurasaki (Giant Purple Butterfly), the national butterfly of Japan, inhabits the area and fireflies can be seen in the vicinity of the rivers of Asuka. Be touched by this rich nature, and feel the stress of dialy life flow away.

There are many kofun (tumuli) in Asuka Historical Park and the surrounding area. Amongst them are the Takamatsuzuka Tumulus and the Kitora Tumulus, which have come to be viewed as important historical discoveries.

There are many stone carvings in the Asuka area. Among them are many mysterious stone carvings such as the Kameishi (the Tortoise Stone) and the Saruishi (the Monkey Stone) from which one can savour the romance of ancient history.

Many historical ruins remain in the locality of Asuka. Historically important sites are scattered all over the area, such as Legendary Asukaitabuki-no-Miya Palace Ruins, which formed the setting off the Taika Reform.

With a long and ancient history, there are many shrines and temples in Asuka. Visitors from throughout Japan continue to come to see temples such as Asuka Temple, which is referred to as the oldest Buddhist temple in Japan.
