Kitora Tumulus Mural Experiential Museum Shijin no Yakata

As one of Asuka’s key cultural assets, the Kitora Tumulus rivals Takamatsuzuka Tumulus thanks in part to the discovery of murals there in 1983 and the tomb’s designation as a special historical site in 2000. Shijin no Yakata features high-definition video of the tomb’s murals along with a full-scale replica of the stone chamber and documentary exhibits that trace the site’s history from its discovery through surveys, research, repairs, and eventual back-filling. An office run by the Agency for Cultural Affairs on the first floor manages the preservation of the murals, and the actual paintings are available for viewing there for a limited time.
